Character Name: Peeta Mellark
Canon: The Hunger Games (books)
Canon Point: Mockingjay: the return to District 12, but before the epilogue
Background/History: Peeta's wiki!

Personality:

With self-deprecating humor, an amiable nature, and the willingness to sacrifice, Peeta Mellark manages to be a somewhat decent human being despite the hell of his circumstances. It is stated repetitively throughout the series that Peeta is one of the few victors who has somehow managed to survive without losing his inherent goodness. But before the picture of a saintly, humble, baker is given, there's also a darker side to the boy with the bread. Often he can be prone to bouts of temper, and his ability to work a crowd stems from an adeptness at manipulation.

Some of Peeta's more positive traits are the ones that dominate his personality. When interacting with people, Peeta is a calm, level-headed young man who can establish rapport easily and has no problem with talking and befriending all walks of life- from downtrodden agricultural workers, professional child killers, to the hopelessly drug addicted- one of Peeta's main strengths is his ability to simply talk.

Stated to have the power of words by the series protagonist, Peeta can move crowds and play the populace with well placed speeches, but more importantly, there is something simply likeable about the baker from District Twelve. Out of all the books, Peeta does not once acquire an enemy in a personal sense, and it is his sense of humor, humility, and endearingness that wins over the crowds at the Capitol and gives him and his partner Katniss the advantage in the Games. He is exceedingly patient with people, and at times often conjures up almost maternal sentiments in the way that he hopes to protect and help those he cares about even when it's clearly out of his power to do so.

His compassion, despite his lack of reservation to fight for his survival, is unprecedented in the series, evident with how he pauses, in the middle of a dangerous game where any moment of weakness can mean death, to comfort a dying woman who is so lost to her drug addiction that reality no longer registers. It's also clear when Peeta meets with the people of District 11 and offers a portion of his winnings in the games to the families of those who have lost their children, Katniss's allies. He also soothes Katniss routinely throughout the novel, something that no other character has managed to do in the series. Peeta is the type of person who not only knows when to give comfort, but can do it flawlessly and without any provocation. He is the boy who always knows the right words to say.

However, Peeta also has his flaws. In the books, he has been shown several times to lose his temper and to give in to his anger- such as when he screams at Katniss before their first games because she underrates herself, or when he goes bezerk in District 11's Justice Hall because of the secrets being with held from him. When he wants something taken care of, he does it in a manner that is swift and efficient and has been seen to place personal feelings aside for it- such as the draining of Haymitch's liquor stores and the cold shoulder he gives to Katniss upon their return from the first games. His ability to empathize with people also leads to him being able to make one or two comments that can totally detonate and destablize a person- something he employs when he knows there's no convincing a person (usually Katniss, but particularly evident with his claim that Katniss was pregnant before the Capitol crowd). He can lie and play a crowd easily to his advantage, and when it comes to political manipulation he is always three steps ahead. His thought process by nature is somewhat deceiving, and Peeta has no problem withholding secrets of his own.

His flaws, combined with his amiable nature, is something that later becomes a weapon against the people he used to call allies. Following the conclusion of the Quarter Quell, Peeta is captured by the Capitol. There, they use him as a mouth piece in an attempt to manipulate a budding rebellion and use the popularity he gained throughout his games to the fullest advantage. Initially, Peeta demonstrates an ability to play the field, as he uses his "interviews" to send subtle messages of warning to the people of District Thirteen. However, Snow soon realizes the futility of the interviews and Peeta is soon subjected to extensive mental and physical torture.

In captivity, Peeta is first tortured in the traditional sense. They imprison him, presumably starve him given his significant loss of weight when Katniss sees him onscreen again, and several other acts of atrocity are committed in the hopes of Peeta breaking or revealing information on a rebellion he knows nothing about. One event, in particular, involved the torture and hideous murder of two Avoxes, Lavinia and Darius, in front of Peeta. While this has obviously lead to shifts in personality, the Capitol's later punishment is what irrevocably changed Peeta forever.

Peeta became the subject of "trackerjacking", an unorthodox method of brainwashing that uses venom and horrific hallucinations to program the person receiving the venom. Peeta was programmed to hate Katniss, a tool created by Snow as a means to assassinate the rebellion's figurehead, the Mockingjay. All of his memories were spliced with the trackerjacker venom's hallucinations, and any positive connection with Katniss was rendered void. When Peeta is finally rescued by District Thirteen, his first reaction to the girl he used to love unconditionally is to wrap his hands around her throat. The Capitol took the loving nature of Peeta and perverted it to form a weapon.

When being rehabilitated by the rebellion, Peeta's demeanor has made a noticeable shift. His words are often hollow and there's a sense of detachment from reality. The manipulation of his mind has left Peeta in a perpetual state of uncertainty, and it shows. While still amiable, there is a heavy, guarded quality to the way he interacts with people, evidenced in particular by how his fellow victors treat him as a ticking time bomb. The recollections of his memories from the games become devoid of the emotions attached to them, hollow and cruelly logical. It's clear that Peeta is unstable, and at any moment he has the possibility of losing control to his delusions as separating reality from fiction has become impossible in multiple areas. The soldiers of the rebellion even make a game of it to help Peeta sort through his memories, called "Real or Not Real", where Peeta states something he knows to be a fact at they tell him if it's real or not real. As evidenced by all the "Reals" in response to stories of his torture, Peeta has suffered some heavy scarring from his capture at the Capitol.

At the current canonpoint I am pulling Peeta from, he has had some more rehabilitation and extensive therapy, but he is far from cured. Reality is still an unstable surface for Peeta, and the Real or Not Real game becomes a heavy factor in a lot of his decisions. While Katniss does not cause him to go into murderous rampages, he is still trying to puzzle the differences between the Katniss the Capitol has painted for him and the Katniss he almost remembers. His hands, in particular, are a source of struggle for him. Often they go into fits, presumably about to attack or strangle the people around him, and Peeta is stated to clutch the backs of chairs as strongly as possible until these "fits" pass. It's clear that Peeta is suffering from a severe form of PTSD, and while he is starting to operate more stably on a day-to-day level, there are good days and bad days with Peeta, and the Boy with the Bread has been significantly changed for the rest of his life.

Abilities/Powers:

While not as combat savvy as the rest of those in the games, Peeta has several talents that have proven useful in not only the arena but also in the tumultuous times following it. Growing up a baker's son, Peeta has impressive physical strength- said to be able to life at least 100 pound bags of flour with ease, as well as an incredible talent for painting. Painting in and of itself is not the most practical skill, but Peeta has been able to construct flawless camouflage patterns in the wilderness because of it. He's also stated to be handy with a knife, and a talented wrestler, placing second out of his district in a local competition.

However, Peeta's main strength lies with words. He has a self-deprecating humor and easy rapport that allows him to win over most crowds instantly. In the interview sections of the Games, he blows the other competitors right out of the water, and he has a very charming and captivating stage presence. He is also able to cleverly manipulate situations, usually staying his fair share of steps ahead of whatever the Capitol has in store for him. Peeta is also very perceptive when it comes to people, he has a way of reading people as well as establishing fast friendships.

Sample Entry Two:

He stared at the pair of boots on the floor.

Peeta knew how to tie shoes. That was real. He knew that this was real, because it was part of the Facts that Katniss had been able to give him during the war.

Your favorite color is orange. You always double-knot your laces. You sleep with the window open.

Those things were real.

Still. Believing something was real and actually knowing something was real were two different animals, and Peeta closed his eyes as he began to lace the boot string through each eyelet, his fingers clenching and unclenching with each movement.

Real. Real. Real. Real.

Boots were always laced tight. Too loose and you could trip while you run and twist or sprain or break. Injuries meant death.

Real.

He had to tie both boots tight because of this.

Not real.

He only had one ankle left to twist and sprain and break. The other one was some sort of Capitol metal that gleamed with too much light on it. The Capitol always did like their Victors on the spotlight.

Peeta wrapped the lace around his thumb, making a semi-circle.

He could thread the other through it, like a notch on a bow-

-the arrow slid along the string, an almost noiseless twang filling his senses as it comes to his throat. She shot the squirrels in the eye every time and he is much bigger than the squirrel-

Not real.

A knot is formed.

She sits by herself, most days.

He brings both ends back together. A double knot appears at the end of the string.

It still takes too long, but every day tying his shoes gets easier.
